Online Safety

Practical guidance for staying safer while using NatterFly chatrooms, groups and other community features. NatterFly is an 18+ community, and all members must be at least 18 years of age.

A Personal Message

NatterFly was created to help people meet through genuine conversation, and I'd like to share something I've learned from my own experiences.

I've always believed that getting to know someone through conversation is far better than asking a hundred questions or simply ticking boxes on a profile. Questions like "What music do you like?", "What's your favourite film?" or "Do you enjoy the beach?" are great conversation starters, but they should lead to something much more meaningful.

The best friendships are built over time. Chat about your day, have a laugh together, share interests and simply enjoy each other's company. That's how you really begin to understand who someone is.

Just as importantly, never feel pressured into sharing personal information. Take your time and get to know someone properly before considering sharing details such as your full name, address, telephone number or other private information. Anyone worth getting to know will understand and respect that.

Finally, remember that you never owe anyone a conversation. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, it's perfectly okay to politely end the chat. A simple "I'd rather not continue this conversation" or just step away from the chat. If they continue contacting you or make you feel uneasy, use the Block feature from their profile. Your online experience should always feel safe, enjoyable and on your own terms.

1. Your safety matters

NatterFly is designed to help people chat, join groups and share interests. As with any online community, protect your privacy and use good judgement when talking to people you do not know personally.

Immediate danger If you or another person is in immediate danger, contact the emergency services. In the United Kingdom, call 999. Do not rely on a website report for an emergency.

2. Protect your personal information

  • Do not post your home address or precise location.
  • Never share passwords, login codes or security answers.
  • Do not share bank, card or payment details.
  • Avoid posting identity documents or private medical information.
  • Be careful about sharing your workplace, routine or travel plans.
  • Do not post sensitive information in chatrooms, group discussions, events, polls or photograph albums.

3. Be cautious with new contacts

A username, profile photograph, group membership or personal story does not prove someone's identity.

Be cautious if someone quickly asks for money, gifts, private photographs, secrecy, personal information or contact away from NatterFly.

4. Never send money

Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, banking details or account access to someone you only know online.

Requests involving emergencies, investments, prizes, business opportunities or romance may be scams.

5. Meeting someone in person

NatterFly groups and events may help members discover people with shared interests. Always take reasonable precautions before meeting someone in person.

  • Tell a trusted person where you are going.
  • Meet in a busy public place.
  • Arrange your own transport.
  • Keep your phone charged and with you.
  • Avoid giving someone your home address.
  • Leave immediately if you feel uncomfortable.

A NatterFly group event is created by a member or group manager unless it is clearly identified as an official NatterFly event. The person creating an event remains responsible for its accuracy and organisation.

6. Images, albums and private content

Do not share intimate, confidential or identifying images unless you understand that they could be copied, saved or redistributed.

Only upload photographs of other people when you have permission to share them. Never pressure another person to provide photographs, videos or personal details.

Content uploaded to a private group or restricted album should not be treated as completely confidential. Other authorised members may still be able to view, copy or save it.

7. Public and private groups

Public groups and their content may be visible to visitors and other members. Private groups restrict access, but their content may still be visible to group owners, managers, approved members and authorised NatterFly staff where review is reasonably necessary.

Do not assume that a private group guarantees secrecy. Avoid sharing information that could put you or another person at risk if it were copied or disclosed.

8. Group owners and managers

Group owners and managers may approve members, manage invitations and moderate discussions, polls, events and albums within their groups.

Their role does not make them NatterFly staff. Do not provide a group owner or manager with passwords, banking information, identification documents or other sensitive information.

Serious concerns about a group owner, manager or group activity should be reported directly to NatterFly.

9. Harassment and unwanted contact

You do not have to continue a conversation or remain in a chatroom or group that makes you uncomfortable.

Stop responding, leave the room or group, and report serious or repeated behaviour through the available reporting tools.

NatterFly does not provide private messaging through chatrooms or whispers. Keep conversations within public or appropriately moderated areas where concerning behaviour is more visible to other members and staff.

10. Preserving evidence

If you need to report serious behaviour, keep the username, chatroom or group name, discussion, event, poll or album link, date, approximate time and relevant screenshots.

Do not alter screenshots or publicly repost sensitive material. Where possible, include enough surrounding context to show what happened.

11. Reporting content

Report threats, harassment, grooming, sexual exploitation, scams, hate, illegal material, impersonation or serious safety concerns.

Reports should be truthful and include enough detail for review. This may include the username, room or group name, relevant link, date, approximate time and screenshots.

Do not rely only on a group owner or chatroom host when reporting serious illegal or safeguarding concerns. Submit the matter through the NatterFly support process so site administrators can review it.

12. Underage Accounts and Safeguarding

NatterFly is strictly for adults aged 18 years and over. If you believe someone under the age of 18 has created an account, please report it to NatterFly. Underage accounts may be suspended or permanently removed.

NatterFly has a zero-tolerance policy towards child sexual abuse, exploitation and grooming. Any attempt to contact, exploit or groom a child, whether on or off the platform, will be treated as a serious breach of our rules and may be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Chatrooms, groups, events, albums and any other community features must never be used to arrange inappropriate contact with children or to obtain, request, create or share sexual or exploitative material involving anyone under the age of 18.

13. Harmful or illegal content

Do not upload, request or distribute content involving child sexual abuse, terrorism, credible threats, exploitation or other serious illegal activity.

This applies to chatrooms, groups, discussions, polls, events, albums, profile content and external links.

Serious matters may be preserved and referred to the appropriate authorities.

14. Health and wellbeing

NatterFly members, group owners, chatroom hosts and moderators are not substitutes for qualified medical, mental-health, legal or financial professionals.

Where someone appears to be at immediate risk of harm, contact emergency services or an appropriate crisis service.

15. Account security

  • Use a unique password.
  • Do not share your password or login code.
  • Sign out on shared devices.
  • Be wary of links asking you to sign in again.
  • Check that you are on the genuine NatterFly website before entering your login details.
  • Report unexpected account, group or profile changes.

NatterFly staff, moderators, group managers and chatroom hosts should never need to ask for your password.

16. Suspicious links and downloads

Be cautious when opening links or downloading files shared in chatrooms, groups, discussions or profile pages.

Do not enter your NatterFly password into another website. Scan downloaded files before opening them and report links that appear fraudulent, misleading or harmful.

17. NatterFly moderation

Administrators and moderators may review reports, restrict accounts, remove content, close chatrooms or restrict groups where reasonably necessary to protect the community.

Group owners and managers may moderate content within their own groups, but NatterFly retains the right to review group activity and take site-wide action.

No moderation system can identify every risk immediately, so report concerns promptly and contact emergency services where there is an immediate danger.

18. Changes to this guidance

This safety guidance may be updated as NatterFly develops and new chatroom, group or community features are introduced.
